Her Telephone

The telephone company had turned off her telephone.  She was in her late seventies  homebound  and she was all alone.  I wanted her to be able to call if she needed help, but her telephone bill was over a thousand dollars and she couldn’t pay it.  Every time she called someone she had been making operator assisted calls which was costing her a fortune.  We convinced the telephone company to restore her service, but to set it up with just basic service, no frills — no extra charges — no operator assisted calls.

She called me the next morning and asked, “where’s my secretary?”  I told her that secretary cost a lot of money and it would be much better if she didn’t use that secretary anymore.   Even though she missed her secretary, she did love having a telephone again.  She was able to call us anytime she wanted to and we could call and check to make sure she was okay.
